Workshop FAQs and Fees 2008

I teach local workshops in the Albuquerque/Santa F้ area, as well as throughout the United States. All of my workshops, with two exceptions, are $75-$85 per person and include a detailed pattern book (20 plus pages) which contains color photos and a bevy of innovative techniques. Both the Dream Coat and the Metropolis Coat are two-day workshops and are $150.00 per person. A $50.00 per person, non-refundable deposit is required for the $75-$85 workshops and a $100.00 per person, non-refundable deposit is required for the $150.00 workshops. If I cancel for any reason, your deposit is refunded.

For workshops away from the Albuquerque/Santa F้ area, my fees are the above stated $75-$85 to $150.00 per person. I also require a minimum of 7 students, with a maximum of 20 students, per workshop. The hosting organization is responsible for all of my transportation costs (airfare or standard IRS mileage reimbursement), including transportation to and from the airport and the workshop location; my meals; and accommodations commencing the night prior to the first workshop and ending the afternoon of the last workshop.

My preference is a nearby hotel where I can have needed down time to prepare for the next day's exciting events. My husband, Mark, generally travels with me to help set up the trunk show; to operate the PowerPoint slide show (if requested); and to run errands. Your organization would not be responsible for any of his expenses. Students will be responsible for their own supplies required for the workshops.

During the workshop, I will have some thirty of my hand knit creations on display for your inspiration. The garments will be used extensively throughout the workshop to offer  insight into working with color, planning the shaping of garments, and to satisfy never-ending tactile desires.

I also offer many beautiful kits for knitting the garments I teach during my workshops. These have become very popular over the years and aid those who might be a bit timid about working with a large variety of colors and textures. If you desire, I will gladly bring a variety of kits in many colorways which would be for sale during the workshops.

And last, but not least!  Yes, I offer a fast-paced, humorous, and totally inspiring PowerPoint slide show featuring my garments; many dazzling knitted works of art by my students; techniques to help you better work with color; and ideas to divinely inspire your own innate creativity. The slide show can be combined with a question and answer session; trunk show; book signing; and offering of my kits. You decide what is best for your group. I have found the best time for this activity is the evening before the next day's workshop. The charge for the slide show, which may be combined with any of the above mentioned activities, is a flat fee of $100.00. Note: These activities (slide show, Q&A, trunk show, book signing, and kits) are offered ONLY in conjunction with a workshop.

 Conceptual Design Jacket/Vest Workshop:

10 - 5pm • 7 Students Minimum - 20 Students Maximum

Level: Advanced Beginner to Expert

Transform five simple shapes into color splashed fashion statements with my easy modular approach. In this class I teach my No Limits-No Boundaries approach to knitting. In doing so, I will teach you to discard all the old rules about same weight yarns, matching dye lots, and the idea of buying enough yarn ahead of time.

You'll decide if you want to knit a vest or long sleeved jacket. If you ever tire of wearing your garment as a vest, it is so easy, using my modular concept, to let your vest grow sleeves! I'll show you how in class.

The beauty of this unique style of knitting lies in freeing the knitter from ever having to plan ahead. Once you have learned the 5 basic modules taught in this class, you can design and knit imaginative garments and home-d้cor items. Combining these shapes as you knit opens up an unlimited world of design potential. I will teach you to design as you knit, by adding length, width, or shaping as you build your creation one module at time.  We will PLAY, not plan!

Time permitting, I will also teach you the highly requested Maya's Creative Crocheted Collar technique during this class.

Student Supplies: Worsted weight yarns in variegates and complimentary solid colors; two size 8 double pointed needles; one size 8 circular needle; size G crochet hook; Post-it notes; flexible, rubber stitch markers; tapestry needle; scissors; tape measure; calculator; and a purchased or knitted garment that fits you nicely.

Classroom Supplies: Tables, chairs, flip chart or marker board with markers, PowerPoint projector and screen if slide show is requested.

Azteka Vest Workshop:

10 - 4pm • 7 Students Minimum - 20 Students Maximum

Level: Advanced Beginner to Expert

It is with much gratitude to Colinette, that I write this pattern, for she was the original inspiration for my current design.  After much coaxing and cajoling from friends and students I have decided to share my own version of this really great vest.  This design is my favorite to knit for myself.  I love variety and a challenge, but not one that makes me have to think too hard!  This great design fits all those criterion. With so many different shapes combined into one pattern, I promise you will not be bored.

With as few as only four different colors, you can create an amazing masterpiece that all your unmitered friends will simply not be able to fathom!  So let the fun begin!

Dream Coat Workshop:

$150.00 Per Person - Two Day Workshop

10 - 5pm • 7 Students Minimum - 20 Students Maximum

Level: Advanced Skills to Expert

This Dream Coat represents a real dream come true. In July 2000, I was among ten people in America honored to study under the "Master of Miters', Herr Horst Schulz in his elegant Berlin flat. Prior to attending his workshop, each participant was to knit an original modular garment. Of course, we all felt it had to be a masterpiece to pass the judgment of Herr Schulz. After much struggle, indecision, designing and redesigning, I finally created the Dream Coat as my entry piece to the workshop.

This coat, like all my designs, was designed on the needles. Since I never planned to reproduce it or teach this design, I didn't take notes on how I did it! Because this has been the most requested piece I have ever knit, I was finally persuaded to write the pattern and teach the class. I hope you will gain as much pleasure knitting and wearing your coat as I have.

Student Supplies: Worsted weight yarns in variegates and complimentary solid colors; two size 6 double pointed needles; two size 6 circular needles; two size 7 double pointed needles; one size 7 circular needle; size G crochet hook; Post-it notes; flexible, rubber stitch markers; tapestry needle; scissors; tape measure; and calculator.

Classroom Supplies: Tables, chairs, flip chart or marker board with markers, PowerPoint projector and screen if slide show is requested.

I will also teach you the highly requested Maya's Creative Crocheted Collar technique during this class.

Student Supplies: Worsted weight yarns in variegates and complimentary solid colors; two size 6 double pointed needles; one size 6 circular needle; size G crochet hook; Post-it notes; flexible, rubber stitch markers; tapestry needle; scissors; tape measure; and calculator.

Concha Vest/Short -Sleeve Top Workshop:

10 - 5pm • 7 Students Minimum - 20 Students Maximum

Level: Advanced Beginner to Expert

This lovely vest of concha shells is as unlimited in its potential colorways as there are delicately tinted shells on the beach. Since the modules look like intricate lace designs, many admirers of this vest insist it is crocheted rather than knitted.  But you will learn the treasures that lie hidden just beneath the surface of the shimmering waters of your charming creation.

The concha motif requires a "bit" more concentration in the beginning than many of my other designs, but it is well worth engaging those additional neurons to create this appealing vest.

Student Supplies: Worsted weight yarns in variegates and complimentary solid colors; two size 8 double pointed needles; size G crochet hook; Post-it notes; tapestry needle; scissors; tape measure; and calculator.

Classroom Supplies: Tables, chairs, flip chart or marker board with markers, PowerPoint projector and screen if slide show is requested.

"Fan" Dango Vest Workshop:

10 - 5pm • 7 Students Minimum - 20 Students Maximum

Level: Advanced Beginner to Expert

This very lacey, flirty vest is nothing more than the Concha Vest turned on its head. You will work from the shoulders down to the beautiful scalloped edging that finishes this dreamy vest . There are just enough twists and turns to make this temptingly different from the techniques used in the Concha Vest. Once again, we will be establishing new brain synapses (which may help you to stave off Alzheimer's!).

So if you want lace without the customary challenges, this ultra feminine, flirty, girly-girly vest is for YOU!

Student Supplies: A wide variety of cottons, silks, rayons, linens, etc., in DK to worsted weight yarns in variegates and complimentary solid colors; two size 8 double pointed needles; size G crochet hook; Post-it notes; tapestry needle; scissors; tape measure; and calculator.

Mola Vest/Jacket Workshop:

10 - 5pm • 7 Students Minimum - 20 Students Maximum

Level: Advanced Beginner to Expert

This whimsical design fulfilled my longing to reproduce in knitting the amazing images created by the San Blas Island Indians in their reverse appliqu้ work. These imaginative people craft their vision of the universe, their spirituality, and their daily encounters with life onto the canvas of their colorful Molas.

I own a large collection of Molas and delight every day in seeing what representations have been depicted in this tedious process. To create this marvelous effect, the Indians stack multiple layers of colorful fabric on top of one another and then meticulously cut away through varying tiers of fabric. Each layer is folded back and stitched to reveal colors and fanciful imagery.

In this class you will learn a far simpler technique to achieve stunning results. This traffic stopping design will make you the envy of all your "unmitered" friends!  While the shapes and color variations look very complex, you will learn how very simple it is. You can choose to knit a vest or a jacket as you learn to "design as you knit" by adding length, width or shaping as you build your extraordinary creation one module at a time.

Student Supplies: DK weight yarns in variegates and complimentary solids in light, medium and dark colors; three size 6 double pointed needles; size F or G crochet hook; Post-it notes; tapestry needle; scissors; tape measure; and calculator.

Classroom Supplies: Tables, chairs, flip chart or marker board with markers, PowerPoint projector and screen if slide show is requested.

This vest is an original design inspired by a tumbling blocks quilt design and a Kaffe Fassett pattern. However, this modular approach is much easier, faster, and more flexible. This is a chance to use lots of beautiful, lingering yarns to create a striking new masterpiece for your wardrobe.

Student Supplies: Worsted weight yarns in variegates and complimentary solids in light, medium and dark colors; two size 6 double pointed needles; size F crochet hook; Post-it notes; tapestry needle; scissors; tape measure; and calculator.

Classroom Supplies: Tables, chairs, flip chart or marker board with markers, PowerPoint projector and screen if slide show is requested.

Metropolis Coat Workshop:

$150.00 Per Person - Two Day Workshop

10 - 5pm • 7 Students Minimum - 20 Students Maximum

Level: Experienced to Expert

The design for this coat took root in my imagination while I was in the city of Berlin. This ancient city, with its centuries-old cathedral spires juxtaposed with futuristic skyscrapers, spoke volumes to my architectural background. The coat consists of two different modules, one representing the primeval structures and the other the contemporary edifices, which live side by side in sharp contrast in many a metropolis.

The modules incorporated in this dazzling coat link beautifully together in a symphony of color. The frog buttons and button band finishing is uniquely different from all my other designs.

Student Supplies: Worsted weight yarns in variegates and complimentary solids in light, medium and dark colors; two size 5 double pointed needles; one size 5 circular needle; two size 6 double pointed needles; size F or G crochet hook; ten stitch holders or large safety pins; Post-it notes; tapestry needle; scissors; tape measure; and calculator.

Classroom Supplies: Tables, chairs, flip chart or marker board with markers, PowerPoint projector and screen if slide show is requested.

Purses, Pouches, Pendants & Other Passions:

10 - 4pm • 7 Students Minimum - 20 Students Maximum

Level: Advanced Beginner to Expert

I have always had a passion for purses, bags, pendants and other vessels as representations of receptacles of the human spirit. It has never been very important to me that these containers actually be functional, although they can be. I am happy with them simply as miniature works of art that satisfy my craving to sculpt with needles and paint with yarn.  I hope you will find inspiration in the class for knitting or crocheting your own special little shrine to what you find important in life.

Whether for holiday gift giving or a special chic treat for yourself, this indulgent class is rippling at the seams with excitement and new techniques! The workshop includes instructions for 10 different projects for shaping your passion into either a functional or non-functional purse, pendant, spirit pouch, or medicine bag to contain sacred objects, special treasures, keys or wampum. But that is only the beginning. Having made one, you'll develop your own designs for hundreds more flights of fancy.

You'll learn numerous new modular shapes ands unique uses for any other shapes you may have already learned. These are really fast, fun, fabulous knitted gifts and keepers. And did I mention.........highly addictive!!!

Student Supplies: Fingering, DK and/or worsted weight funky, glitzy yarns in variegates and complimentary solid colors; three size 6 to 8 double pointed needles; one size 6 to 8 circular needle; size F or G crochet hook; Post-it notes; tapestry needle; scissors; tape measure; and calculator.

Classroom Supplies: Tables, chairs, flip chart or marker board with markers, PowerPoint projector and screen if slide show is requested.
